The client
Savings Index tracks savings rates across the UK market. Banks and building societies subscribe to it to see where their products rank against competitors' products, how rates are moving and where the market is heading.
The challenge
The platform had grown up on WordPress and had reached its limits. Every page load hit the data API, so pages were slow. The tools looked dated and were hard to use on a phone. Adding a feature meant working around plugins rather than building what was actually needed. The sales team was also selling to banks, which expect enterprise-grade security and a polished product, and the old site didn't give that impression.
The solution
I rebuilt the platform from scratch as a custom Laravel application. Every existing user account carried over, and subscribers didn't need to reset their passwords.
A suite of eight market-intelligence tools
Subscribers get a personal dashboard that summarises everything they track. From there they can open eight dedicated tools:
My Products: follow your own products' rates against the market
Daily Rate Change: see every rate that moved in the market today, grouped and colour-coded
Historical Rates: build and save interactive charts of rate history
Market Monitoring: see where a chosen bank ranks across every product category
Rates Monitor: ranked league tables for specific product types
Index Builder: build custom peer groups and compare banks side by side
All Monitor: a configurable view of the whole market, with saved views
Cash Ladder: model deposit ladders and compound interest over time
The tools share interactive charts, ranked tables and one-click Excel exports, and they work on desktop and mobile.
Enterprise-ready security
Banks have strict IT policies, so I integrated Okta single sign-on and multi-factor authentication. Staff at client organisations log in with their own corporate credentials. The login screen recognises each user's email and sends them to the right sign-in method automatically.
Speed
Market data is cached intelligently, so pages load almost instantly instead of waiting on the data API. Each tool shows users exactly when its data was last refreshed.
A website the client controls
A new admin panel lets the Savings Index team manage users, permissions and settings without a developer. They can also edit the marketing pages, legal pages and product screenshots. The public site now has a lead-capture flow, with enquiries landing straight in the admin panel. It also has GDPR-compliant cookie consent and spam protection.
Built for selling
A one-click "demo mode" replaces real bank and product names with neutral placeholders. The sales team can take screenshots or run live demos without exposing data from existing clients.
The launch
The new platform replaced the WordPress site in a single planned cutover, and subscribers lost no data. The old site was kept archived as a fallback. The production and staging environments are fully separated, so new features can be tested safely without touching live client data.
The results
Pages load much faster, and the site is fully usable on mobile
Enterprise SSO opened the door to larger financial institutions with strict security requirements
The sales team now has a modern product they're proud to demo, and new bank clients signed up within 6 weeks of launch
The client's team updates content and manages users themselves, which reduces ongoing development costs
